Understanding Your Season
I had it all wrong….it`s time for a restart.
I self-sabotage, my overachiever qualities within me get the best of me and clutter my brain and I feel exhausted. As a first-generation college graduate and immigrant, I have carried the belief that “it MUST be done now, all of it…if not I fail.” So I add, I add more than I am willing to admit that I can carry.
How can I be tired? How dare I say that the load is too heavy when my mother works two jobs to barely make ends meet. Those words must never leave my lips. “Do it all with grace, all for the honor of God” is the constant voice in my head. But I’m tired, not so much of physical labor, but of the constant thinking of how can I do it all? live, thrive, and serve. I`m still figuring that part out as I go.
But one thing I know, and that’s that I can’t do it all, at least not in one season. We were not supposed to do it all at once. Seasons are meant to serve different purposes, and when we try to force all of this into one season, it disrupts the natural flow of things. We get discouraged, tired, and lose interest quickly, and dissonance occurs. The problem is not that we are overachievers, the problem is that we try to fit all we have to say and do in one moment.
I`ve had it all wrong, and as they say, acceptance is the beginning of healing and growth. For the sake of my next three steps, I am going to ride the season’s analogy a little longer, bare with me.
Understanding your season requires ongoing effort.
- Understand what you are looking to produce in this season of your life. This will require introspection, so having a journal nearby is going to be a great tool. In this first step, shifting your priorities, and even putting some away for a later time, will take place. This may be challenging for some and may take multiple attempts, to be honest, and willing with yourself.
2. Examine the soil. Not all soil is fertile ground and by soil, I mean your environment. Your environment may be what is holding you back. Is your environment healthy and aligned to meet your purpose discussed in step one?
3. Are the elements around you nurturing and aiding the growth? This includes daily habits, self-care practices, are there boundaries that you are upholding? are you eating and exercising?
Not understanding my season was difficult, I felt that everything needed to be done now. Honoring our season is not a matter of not accomplishing our goals or desires, but learning how to prioritize, doing so prevents disappointments and burnout.
I wish you the best on your wellness journey as you reconnect your mind and body. Happy healing.
